Red Franz Man
In 1900, a body was discovered in a bog near Neu Versen in Germany. The body was that of a man aged around 35, dating from around AD 300. The body, on display in the Nieders?sische Landesmuseum Hannover, was naked when found, and is known as Red Franz (or Roter Franz) because of the stark red colour of his hair. As with the Yde Girl, this was probably blonde in life and has been coloured by the peat. He appears to have been a horseman during his lifetime, and his right humerus was struck by (probably) a missile and his right clavicle was broken, but both had healed before death. He was killed by having his throat cut, possibly as a ritual sacrifice.
The skull was recreated from CT-scans, but was badly distorted. These distortions were removed using CAD software on a computer, and the skull replica created using laser sintering (a technique in which a laser is used to create the model in plastic). The finished reconstruction was cast in wax, and hair and a beard were added as there was much evidence for these remaining on the body as it was found.
